 E. A. Wallis Budge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Budge entered the British Musuem in the re-named Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in 1883, and though he was initially appointed to the Assyrian section, he soon transferred to the Egyptian section, where he began to study the ancient Egyptian language with Samuel Birch until the latter's death in 1885.
Budge became interested in languages before he was ten years old, but given that he left school at the age of 12 in 1869 to work as a clerk at the firm of W.H. Smith, he mostly studied Hebrew and Syriac with a volunteer tutor.
Budge was introduced to the Keeper of Oriental Antiquities, Samuel Birch, and his assistant, the Assyriologist George Smith, and Smith helped Budge occasionally with his Assyrian, whereas Birch allowed the young man to study cuneiform tablets in his office and obtained books for him to read from the British Musuem Library.

EGYPTIAN LANGUAGE: Easy Lessons In Egyptian Hieroglyphics by E A Wallis Budge
Sir E. Wallis Budge, late Keeper of the Egyptian and Syrian Antiquities in the British Museum, leads the beginning Egyptologist into arcane hieroglyphic realms with the kind of lucid care that led his predecessors to the secrets of the Rosetta Stone.
Budge gives the history of hieroglyphic writing, its evolution into hieratic and demotic scripts, and the fascinating tale of its decipherment by Young, Champollion, Akerblad and others.
To read Egyptian one used to have to be philologist, orientalist and cryptographer at once; readers today may thank 200 years' labor by Egyptologists from Barthelemy to Budge for the privilege of being able to read and study hieroglyphic texts much as one studies any foreign language.

Athough Budge's translation has been proved to be in error, it is still worth reading.
Unlike most of Budge's other works, this is written for the layman to understand.

Department of Ancient Egypt & Sudan: FAQs
Sir E A Wallis Budge (1857-1934) published prolifically during his lifetime.
Budge ignored major developments made in the fields of transcription, grammar and lexicography, and was neglectful in matters of archaeology and provenance.
Budge's works are still in print, but this is because they are out of copyright, and so the text can be cheaply reprinted.

Wallis Budge would have his readers believe that they were SAVAGES and their religion wasn't really even worth bothering with..
Wallis Budges' Book, "The Gods of The Egyptians" was Interesting at BEST and full of insulting and incorrect terminology and opinions about the Ancient Egyptians at WORST!!
The book delved into the belief structure of the religion of the Egyptians but he referred to the Egyptians as "savages" many times then made statements that "...their ideas about the world beyond the grave and God and gods were of a savage, childish and inconsistent character".

It's unclear whether Budge himself did the rewrite of the translation, but it's clear that he at least claims responsibility for it,.

Ninety years ago E. Wallis Budge produced his volume Egyptian Language: Easy Lessons in Egyptian Hieroglyphics with Sign List "to form an easy introduction to the study of the Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions." Budge's Egyptian Language provides a introductory overview of how the hieroglyphic system relates to major categories of Egyptian grammar.
If the reader pays careful attention to the material Budge presents she may be delighted at to find she has acquired some ability to cope with the reading passages provided at the end of the text.
Also, Budge has a heavy-handed style of writing that is hard to wade through sometimes.

 The Pronunciation of Ancient Egyptian
Many books by E.A. Wallis Budge are available from Dover, but they are grotesquely out of date and perhaps had better be avoided -- a generation or more of readers may be hopelessly confused by Budge's use of vowels.
Thus the central vowel is a long "i." It is the general impression that long "e's" in Coptic come from long "i's" in Egyptian.
A new grammar of similar quality, with vocabulary, James E. Hoch's Middle Egyptian Grammar [ISBN 0-920168-12-4], although "not entirely finished" and provided only in spiral binding, has now become available, either from Benben Publications (1483 Carmen Drive, Mississauga, Ontario L5G 3Z2, Canada) or from James Hoch himself.

If this chapter be known [by the deceased] he shall be victorious both upon earth and in the underworld.
