The river is often said to be unusual because it flows north; while many rivers in the Northern Hemisphere do, the Wallkill perhaps stands out because it manages to do this between two major south-flowing rivers, the Hudson and the Delaware.
In Ulster County, it passes by Wallkill, the second community to take its name from the river, and then the striking scenery of the Shawangunk Ridge is visible as it winds past New Paltz, where its flood plain becomes more noticeable, on the way to its mouth at the Rondout.
Wallkill is a census-designated place, generally identified as coterminous with ZIP Code 12589 located mostly in the eastern half of the Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York but partly spilling over into adjacent regions of the Orange County towns of Newburgh and Montgomery.

The project was designed to establish a riparian buffer along the banks of the Wallkill River in the park, which can serve as an effective filter for non-point source pollution draining into the river from stormwater runoff.
The part of the Wallkill River that runs through Station Park was selected for the project due to the lack of existing vegetation as well as it being a public park that was fairly accessible for volunteers to provide assistance.

Municipalities in the Wallkill River Watershed area are drawing drinking water from wells that draw from infiltration galleries along the Wallkill River, which is an impaired river.
Pesticide contaminated sediment is a particular problem in Wallkill and in some cases communities draw downstream not far from sewage outflows.
