Walloon Lake existed in the pre-glacial times as a river valley, which was re-shaped and deepened by glacial activity.
It is the 26th largest lake in Michigan, with a lake surface area of 7.3 square miles and a shoreline of 30 miles.
It is 9.2 miles at its longest point, from Mud Lake at the tip of the West Arm to the Foot, is mean and maximum depths of 28.9 feet and 100 feet respectively, and is about 100 feet above the elevation of Little Traverse Bay (about 1 mile away).

Boik said there are a lot of unsafe launches on Walloon Lake that do not have parking, do not have a maneuvering area and do not have sanitary facilities.
However, Boik said the department is continuing to evaluate property on the lake, adding it is looking at another spot for the launch as well as the possibility of building a launch in the village of Walloon Lake.
Edmund Brochu, of Walloon Lake, said he has fished the lake for years and hopes the department continues its efforts in the area.

On their annual summer trip to their cottage on Walloon Lake, the Hemingway family probably traveled most often on the Manitou, the pride of the Northern Michigan Steamship Line.
From the Walloon Lake depot, the family might have occasionally reached their cottage via the Tourist, a small, steam-driven transport boat.

The township was named Melrose but the townspeople applied for a post office named Bear Lake, but there was already a Bear Lake post office in Michigan, and they were given one name Tolcott on October 19, 1897, with Frank Jones as its first postmaster.
The office was renamed Talcott on March 4, 1899, and Walloon Lake on September 22, 1900.
The railroad people were curious as to how it had got there, and they found that years before a group of Walloons from Belgium, had settled at the north end of Bear (now Walloon) Lake, but that now no trace of them remained.
