Walloon Lake is the headwater for the Bear River near Petoskey, Michigan, United States.
He had seen that a group of Walloons from Belgium had settled the north end of the lake on an old railroad map, and so it was named.
The lake covers 4,270 acres and is primarily fed from groundwater.

Walloon Lake existed in the pre-glacial times as a river valley, which was re-shaped and deepened by glacial activity, it is the 26th largest lake in Michigan, with a lake surface area of 7.3 square miles and a shoreline of 30 miles.

Walloon Lake currently has 22 access sites (see attached map) - some have launch facilities, some have small parks and swim areas and some are available for access to boats already on the lake.
While the Walloon Lake Association repeatedly is blamed for the poor condition of existing access sites on Walloon Lake, the fact is these sites are controlled by local Townships and Counties and the responsibility for their improvement lies with these local governmental units.
In early January, 2005, a letter was mailed to Walloon Lake Association members, from Chuck Hyatt, President, containing an announcement on the outcome of Bear Creek Township's grant request to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund for the purchase of land at the end of Gruler Road.

The village of Clarion was established along the railroad about a mile from the foot of Walloon Lake, and Talcott (later known as Walloon Lake village) was developed shortly afterward.
The Manitou docked at a number of Michigan ports on its way north to Mackinaw Island, and the Hemingways would have disembarked at Harbor Springs, a port that was among the easiest for this large vessel because the channel was so deep.
From the Walloon Lake depot, the family might have occasionally reached their cottage via the Tourist, a small, steam-driven transport boat.

The Stroud House--On the northwest corner of Lake Street across the road from the Red Fox Inn Built in 1886, this was the home of Alonzo Stroud, one of the founders and developers of Horton Bay.

(June 2005) I just got back from the 2005 Bear River Writers Conference, held in a beautiful setting on Michigan's Walloon Lake (the same lake where the young Ernest Hemingway once summered).
Bear River attracts poets, fiction writers, memoirists and essayists from thoughout North America, and it is the only writers' conference I'll attend this year as a participant, rather than a presenter.
Thanks, too, to fiction writer Peter Ho Davies (director of the University of Michigan's MFA Program in Creative Writing) and poet Amy Rust Higgins for their encouragement, their willingness to read, and most of all for their finely attuned ears.
