In 1818, Wallula began as a trading fort near the confluence of the Walla Walla and Columbia Rivers.
By 1889, Wallula was a flourishing railroad town with stores, saloons, a doctor's office, several Chinese laundries, millinery, restaurants, photographer, and a newspaper.
In the late 1960s a port district at Wallula was created for cheap freight for crops from the interior.

Wallula Gap is a large water gap through basalt anticlines in the Columbia River basin just south of the confluence of the Walla Walla River and the Columbia River.
The Wallula Gap was formed by the historic flow of the Salmon-Snake and Columbia Rivers combined with the glacial waters that poured across the Channeled Scablands during the Missoula Floods.
The bending (Geological shear) of the ancient lava flows is clearly visible in the folded layers of basalt exposed in the steep walls of the gap.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that an industrial Energy Saving Assessment is taking place at the Boise Cascade facility in Wallula, Washington, as part of the comprehensive national energy efficiency effort undertaken by the Bush Administration.
The Boise Cascade Wallula Mill employs about 400 people and produces 375 tons per day of bleached long fiber market pulp, 370 tons per day of corrugated medium for the manufacture of boxes and 660 tons per day of fine paper for copy paper, envelopes, and other grades of various weights.
DOE’s Energy Saving Teams have completed visits to 29 large federal facilities and are in the process of visiting 200 of the most energy-intensive manufacturing facilities in the United States as part of the national “Easy Ways to Save Energy” campaign launched by Secretary Bodman on October 3, 2005.

The Wallula area was designated nonattainment for PM10 and classified as moderate under sections 107(d)(4)(B) and 188(a) of the Clean Air Act upon enactment of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (Act or CAA).
The temporary waiver was intended to provide Ecology time to evaluate further the Wallula nonattainment area and to determine the significance of the anthropogenic and nonanthropogenic sources impacting the area.

While Wallula, with four gas turbines, will be closest to home, there are 16 total proposed or just completed gas turbines contained within greater eastern Washington and Oregon that could possibly have an effect on the Walla Walla Valley.
Along with Wallula, in Alderdale, WA there is a proposal for a 3-turbine plant that would produce 850 MW of energy and in Starbuck, WA there is a proposal for a 4-turbine plant that would produce 1200 MW of energy if approved.
