Wally Hammond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hammond is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the history of cricket: his Wisden obituary put him in a class with W.
Hammond started his career as a professional but became an amateur in 1938, allowing him to captain England, a position to which professionals were not then appointed.
After 1946-7 Hammond only played two more first-class games, for MCC in 1950 and Gloucestershire in 1951.

 Wally Hammond
Hammond's biographer David Foot suggested that this was what is euphemistically known as a "social disease" (surely antisocial would be more appropriate?), and that it accounted for Hammond's mood-swings later in life.
Hammond was a famously moody character, and his humour can hardly have been improved by those constant comparisons with the incomparable.
The Don, in his debut series, was an interested observer when Hammond broke the Test record with 905 runs in the 1928-29 Ashes series, and Bradman smashed the record himself with 974 in the next rubber, in 1930.

Wally was also Director of the Ram Theatre Company, and founder of the 1983 Redbridge Festival of Jewish Music and Drama, which led the way to the later burgeoning of the Jewish cultural renaissance, now so well established in the UK.
Wally is now busy at work on his 'Concerto in jazz' which will be premiered at this concert and featuring solos by Ronnie Findon, Paul Eshelby and James Pearson.
Motivated by his enduring love of Jewish culture in all its forms, and moving easily between the worlds of jazz, Klezmer and composition; he has written a series of Folk Operettas, one of which, ' Kinneret ', was performed at the London Mayfair Theatre.

Hammond Sports Hall of Fame - The Inductees Class of 2002
As a Hammond High wrestler (Class of 1962), he was a state champion in ’61 (127 pounds) and ’62 (133 pounds), his latter title helping the Wildcats to a team state championship.
At Hammond High, he also was a standout on the cross country and track teams, earning seven letters and achieving MVP honors three years in cross country.
Three of them—fellow Hammond Sports Hall of Famers Rudy Chapa, Tim Keough and Carey Pinkowski—turned the high school track and field world upside down in ’75 when they managed the unprecedented fete of each breaking the 9-minute mark in the 2-mile run.

Cricinfo - Players and Officials - Wally Hammond
Wally Hammond was a most exciting cricketer, perhaps the more so for the hint of an almost Olympian aloofness.
Statistics cannot tell all: but revealingly they show of Wally Hammond that he made 167 centuries and reached fifty without making a hundred 184 times, in Tests 22 hundreds, only 24 fifties without reaching three figures; in each case almost even money on 100 if he got halfway.

 CATALOG: JOHNNY “HAMMOND” SMITH
Hammond responded to these developments by making electric piano and synthesizer a prominent part of his presentation, and recruiting the Mizells to craft this brisk and eminently sampleable session.
Johnny “Hammond” Smith was the most subtle of the organists to emerge in the 1950s, as he displays on the two sessions combined on this compact disc.
One hallmark of "Hammond"’s sound in the early Sixties, in addition to his lyrical approach to the keyboard, was that he favored the organ/vibes/guitar front line heard in this set, rather than the organ/guitar/tenor saxophone configuration favored by the majority of "soul-jazz" bands.

Guardian Mandarin's investigation 'puts Mandelson in clear'
If confirmed later this month when Sir Anthony "Wally" Hammond reports his own findings to 10 Downing Street, the cabinet secretary's private verdict would acutely embarrass Tony Blair by suggesting - even in opaque civil service language - that the prime minister and his closest confidantes simply panicked in the face of media pressure.
This week Sir Richard wrote to the Daily Telegraph to explain his own lunch with the Hindujas in 1998 and also to say he had sent "all the relevant information in my possession" to the inquiry, which is based in his own ex-department, the Home Office.
Far from concluding that Mr Mandelson had done something that justified his removal from office for the second time, Sir Richard's overnight inquiries on February 23-24 pointed to the opposite decision.

A cluster of boys was waiting for signatures but Hammond cuffed one of them out of the way.
He was crouching on his heels, never moved an inch but simply dropped his left hand and flicked the ball up in front of him taking it on the drop in both hands.
He retired after he got his hundred and I made my way to the gate where he was to pass into the rooms.

We had just enough room to store this when up drove Wally Hammond followed by a second truck load which to his frustration he had to take back to his plant.

 spiked-life Column Offside, 24 July
Quite what England skipper Wally Hammond would have made of Twenty20 cricket, in which games last less than three hours, is anyone's guess.
After the tenth day of play the so-called 'timeless test' was abandoned without resolution because the England team had to catch their boat home.
Market research commissioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed that the sport was not attracting young people or women (the county championship barely attracts anyone with a pulse rate, let alone young people and women).
