 collectSPACE - news - "Schirra's (Cyber) Space"
March 15, 2005-- Wally Schirra, the original astronaut with the 'right stuff' to fly all three of the United States' early spacecraft, has recently launched his first mission into cyberspace: the debut of WallySchirra.com.
Schirra's story, which he shared on the pages of his 1988 book Schirra's Space, is that of a Navy test pilot turned all-American hero as one of the nation's first astronauts.
The "they" Schirra speaks of is primarily his webmaster Tracy Kornfeld, a Connecticut-based website developer who builds intricate models of spacecraft in his free time.

Schirra shrugged off his role here as "editing and verifying a lot of things." If that's not just mere modesty, he has to be the most accomplished fact-checker in publishing history, the only man to travel in Mercury, Gemini and Apollo flights.
Schirra gets and takes the last chance to flavor the book by drawing on his matchless collection of anecdotes.
Buckbee and Schirra maintain a sense of proportion, and also of humor, about the perils, promises, frustrations, and failures of those days.

Wally Schirra was the fifth American in space (Mercury 8) and the only astronaut to have flown Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions.
On December 15 1965, Schirra made his second space flight, on Gemini 6a, a mission notable both for the steel nerves of Commander Schirra and pilot Thomas Stafford (riding out earlier failed launches) and the close vehicular syncronization achieved during their rendezvous with the Gemini 7 craft crewed by Jim Lovell and Frank Borman.
Although his name is not as recognizable as Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong, Schirra's face is familiar due to his many public appearences speaking on the lessons of the space program.
