The surface of the Walnut Street Bridge is wood planking, both on the former roadway and the raised walks on either side.
The bright blue bridge, 2,370 feet long from ramp to ramp, was built in 1891 and was the first multiuse (horses, cars, pedestrians) structure to span the Tennessee River in Chattanooga.

FALL RIVER -- Arthur Galvin Costa, 78, of Stafford Road and formerly of Walnut Street in Swansea, died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, in Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Born in Fall River, son of the late Manuel Costa and the late Evangelina "Mary" (Galvin) Peters, he lived in Fall River for most of his life, moving to Swansea in 1970 but returning to Fall River in 1988.
