  Walpole, New Hampshire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The grant was renewed in 1761, when the town was renamed "Walpole," in honor of Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, and the first prime minister of England.
The first bridge across the Connecticut River, an engineering feat in its day, was built at Walpole in 1785, and is regarded as one of the most famous early spans in the United States.
Walpole Academy, built in 1831 and attributed to master-builder Aaron Prentiss Howland, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 George Vertue
In 1717 he was appointed engraver to the Society of Antiquaries[?].
From 1713 on, Vertue had also been a keen researcher on details of the history of British art, accumulating about forty volumes of notebooks, which were purchased after his death by Horace Walpole.
The original wording of the manuscripts was only published in the 20th century by the Walpole Society.

O'Neil was born in Norwood and was a lifelong resident of Walpole.
She volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Walpole Historical Society, the Walpole Council on Aging, and, until she was 90, the Ellis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Norwood.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 6 in the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Walpole, with interment in St Francis Cemetery in Walpole.

Carmen A. Barletta of Walpole, formerly of Dedham and East Boston, died on Oct. 23 at the Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain.
She is survived by her husband, Gerino "Skeets" Orlando of Walpole; three daughters, Florence McAlister and Janet Devine of Foxboro and June Orlando of Walpole; a son, Lawrence Orlando of Walpole; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gray was often at Walpole's Strawberry Hill estate at Twickenham, and made acquaintance with some of Walpole's friends, although he was generally shy in society.
Walpole's admiration of the poem led to the one incident in Gray's biography which has a touch of conventional romance.
After a visit in 1755 to his and Walpole's friend, Chute, in Hampshire, he was taken ill and remained for many weeks laid up at Stoke.

Located at 33 West St. in Walpole center, the house is open to public on Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m.
The house also has portraits of Sir Robert Walpole, Isaac Newton Lewis, and the various members of the Bird family, as well as scale models of various town buildings, and antique musical instruments.
The historical society is a non-profit, voluntary organization that is supported by membership dues.

WALPOLE -- Lucy M. (Tomaso) Cogswell, a longtime housekeeper for the Sharon Inn, died April 11 at Charlwell House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Norwood.
Cogswell was a member of the Italian American Society in Walpole and enjoyed playing bocce with the organization.
She also leaves four other daughters, Caroline Cohen of Franklin, Ruth Garrett of Newtown, Conn., Lucille Farrar of Forestdale, and Judith Harris of Medfield; a brother, Leo Tomaso of California; two sisters, Virginia Daddario and Thelma Gentili both of Walpole; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

The Walpole Society was formed in 1911, and was named after Horace Walpole (1717-1797), who published the first history of art in Britain, basing his work on the manuscript notebooks of George Vertue (1684-1756), which he had acquired.
One of the first goals of the Society was to publish the notebooks in their original form, which included much material that Walpole omitted.
The Society's publications are indispensable to all those interested in British Art, but in order to continue its essential work, the Society needs a flourishing membership.

Founded in 1910, The Walpole Society has been dedicated to the appreciation and scholarship of American arts for over 85 years.
In its early years the Society published several Glossaries of the decorative arts, and its publication of Hollis French's book on American silver was the first study of the marks of American silversmiths.

Having been a member of the Walpole Historical Commission and the Walpole Historical Society I had regularly gone to the library to access the microfilms of early newspapers and copies of historic articles.
When I retired and became secretary of the Walpole Historical Society I noticed the computers for public use at the library.
Then, when I was getting into other areas on the computer, the librarians were a resource for computer information, just as I am a resource for historic questions that come to them from around the country.
