Walschaert valve gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Walschaert valve gear on a Pennsylvania Railroad E6s
The Walschaert gear had the advantage that it could be mounted entirely on the outside of the locomotives, leaving the space between the wheels and frames clear; this caused adoption first among some articulated locomotives.
This condition precludes adjustment of the valve gear by altering the length of the radius rod.

Valve gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Walschaert valve gear on a steam locomotive (a PRR E6s).
The valve gear of a steam engine is the mechanism that operates the inlet and exhaust valves to admit steam into the cylinder and allow exhaust steam to escape, respectively, at the correct points in the cycle.
A key flaw in all of these valve gears is that the same valve motion operates the exhaust valve as well as the inlet valve, making it much harder to achieve the desirable valve events on both the inlet and the exhaust at the same time.

The reverse arm (reach rod or the yoke in Baker gear) is the lever that changes the valve gear between forward and reverse.
In general, the shorter the length of a swinging rod and the larger the angle of swing, the greater is the distortion added to the valve gear from that rod.
The center of the valve and the center of the cylinder or valve ports are compared and their difference is printed to the screen as valve position.

68-a it is obvious that the motion of the valve is obtained from the crosshead and an eccentric crank attached to the main crank pin.
The Walschaert gear is operated by a reverse lever in the same manner as the Stephenson gear.
In the Stephenson gear, a movement of the reverse lever causes the link to be raised or lowered, the link block remaining stationary, whereas in the Walschaert gear, the link remains stationary and the link block is raised or lowered.

If the valve gear has been accurately designed, constructed and adjusted, when the main pin is placed on either dead center the link will be in such a position that when the radius rod is raised and lowered through the link there will be no forward or backward motion of the radius rod.
The same eccentric crank, eccentric crank pin and eccentric rod mechanism, as used on the Walschaert valve gear, is also used to drive the forward and backward swing of the gear connecting rod of the Baker valve gear.
In such a design the timing relationship between the gear connecting rod and the main pin is correct when the gear connecting rod is moved to the identical point of the swing of the gear connecting rod when the main pin is on either the front or back dead centers.

The link of a Walschaert valve gear, or the gear connecting rod of a Baker valve gear, receive their reciprocating motion from the eccentric rod which is driven by the rotary motion of the eccentric crank pin.
In order for either of these valve gears to provide correct steam distribution to the cylinder, the reciprocating motion, or forward and backward swing, of the Walschaert link or the Baker gear connecting rod must occur in specific relation, or timing, to the rotation of the main pin.
After completing the construction and assembly of the valve gear, adjustments are made to the various components in an effort to compensate for any dimensional discrepancies that may exist.

A piston valve is a cylindrical spool-shaped valve constructed with packing rings much the same as the steam piston that moves through the cylinder, except that a piston valve is double or composed of two pistons connected by center rod or spool working in a bushing of equal diameter.
A direct motion valve gear is one in which the valve moves in the same direction as the eccentric rod, that is doing the work, in many cases no rocker arm is used.
With a direct valve gear and an outside admission valve, the eccentric will be a quarter of a turn or 90 degrees ahead of the crank pin and advanced enough to move the valve the amount of the lap and lead.

Bulleid Society - Rebuild Vave Gear
One of the main reasons for rebuilding the Bulleid Pacifics were the problem encountered with the chain driven valve gear, which was enclosed in an oil bath between the frames.
As Bulleid's valve gear used outside admission it was decided to keep this for the outside cylinders but a new casting was made for the inside cylinder incorporating standard inside admission.
Below is a diagram showing the layout of the valve gear used in the rebuilds.

This sets the valves in the steam chest to admit steam to whichever side of the pistons needed to drive the locomotive in the intended direction.
With the reverser in full gear (forward or backward) this sets the length of the valve stroke at its longest possible setting which allows steam to be admitted at full boiler pressure for the entirety of the piston stroke.
This reduces the lenght of the valve stroke which reduces the percentage of time during the piston stroke that live steam from the boiler is actually being admitted to the cylinder.

Steam locomotive basics - section 6, valve gear
he function of the locomotive valve gear is to regulate the movement of the valves so that steam is admitted and exhausted from the cylinders in relation to the position of the pistons.
In the Walschaert valve gear, which was common among many railway companies except for the Great Western, fore-and-aft movement of the valve spindle is controlled by both the combination lever and the expansion link.
Adjustment to the length of valve travel is made by raising or lowering the position of the radius rod within the expansion link.

 Trouble Shooting
If the slide valves still do not seat properly, it may be necessary to file the valve block opening slightly so that the valve block is a slip fit in the valve and the valve rest squarely on its face.
Check valve balls occasionally stick shut and can sometimes be freed by tapping the valve body with a small wrench or by topping off the water supply and pumping vigorously for several strokes.
When the piston is at front dead center and the valve gear set for forward running, the edge of the slide valve should be just beginning to uncover the forward steam port.

To keep it simple, on the left (firemans side) with the crankpin at 6 o'clock, the return crank should be to the rear of the wheel axle.
Valve timing also varies with left or right lead, type of steam valves and type of valve gear.

How to Animate Walschaert's Valve Gear using Abacus Train Sim Modeller v1.1
Walschaert's valve gear does not provide power on a single stroke.
A vacuum is created in front of the piston head, which tends to pull the piston forwards, and this is assisted by steam applied from behind.
This breaks the vacuum, and causes live steam to be injected into the space ahead of the advancing piston.

The auto engine uses valves to control the fuel/air going into the cylinder and 1522 uses valves to control the steam in a similar manner.
Both engines use a mechanical feedback to control the operation of the valves - the auto via a camshaft and lifters while the 1522 uses various linkages, in a Walschaert's valve gear arrangement, driven by the eccentric arm on #2 driver.
The two lubricators, one on either side of the engine, use a drive arm from the locomotive's valve gear to create a pumping motion to force steam oil to various bearings on the drive train as well as lubricating the piston and valves in their cylinders.

Valve gears control the entry and exit of steam into and out of the cylinders.
The most widely used system of controlling the valves was invented in 1844 by the Belgian engineer Eyidle Walschaert.
The movement for the valves and pistons inside the cylinders transmits driving action to the wheels through interconnecting rods.
