 Walt Whitman Bridge (I-76)
The bridge plan was opposed by the mayors of Gloucester City and Camden, who contended that their four-lane tunnel alternative would require fewer right-of-way acquisitions, and would not blight the surrounding area like the bridge alternative would.
One of the last bridges designed by Othmar Ammann, the Walt Whitman Bridge held true to the design standards, such as deep stiffening trusses and streamlined towers, that characterized his other postwar works including the Delaware Memorial Bridge (opened in 1951), the Throgs Neck Bridge (opened in 1961) and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (opened in 1964).
To the west, the bridge connects to the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) and the Delaware Expressway (I-95).

Walt Whitman was an American poet and a son of Long Island.
In "Drum Taps", Whitman's reaction to the nation's traumatic Civil War, he speaks of the ultimate pointlessness and futility of war in the poem "Reconciliation": "For my enemy is dead, a man divine as myself is dead".
Walt was a firm believer in democracy and much in "Leaves of Grass" gives us a clear vision of his belief that American ideals might serve as an example to the world.

Lehigh University - RCEAS News: ATLSS and Walt Whitman Bridge
The Walt Whitman Bridge was built in the mid-1950s, but for the first five decades of its life no one monitored its suspension cables to measure how they were weathering the stress imposed daily by thousands of cars and trucks.
An upward spiking of the line means a truck is crossing; a cyclical, gentle sloping means the bridge is moving naturally in response to wind, and not because of vehicles.
In addition to the Walt Whitman project, ATLSS is also working with the consulting firm of Edwards and Kelcey on a contract with the City of Philadelphia to monitor the performance of two of the city’s 2,500 mast-armed, cantilevered, traffic-signal support systems.

It is obviously not a monument to Walt Whitman.
A bridge was suggested under a sort of Manifest Destiny spirit; a bridge across the East River, connecting the village of Brooklyn to New York, would also thereby raise the value of these lands on the east side of the river.
Just as skeptics doubted the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, but later embraced it as it proved functional and awe-inspiring, and later came to use it as a screen upon which they could project their ideals, the same can be said of Walt Whitman.
