Walter Alexander Willis (1919-1999) was a well-known Irish science fiction fan, resident in Belfast.
Willis was awarded a 1958 Hugo Award as "Outstanding Actifan" (active fan), which replaced the Best Fanzine category that year.
Willis was known for his droll, humorous writing, especially in a column "The Harp That Once or Twice" that began in the US fanzine Quandry (not a typo) edited by Lee Hoffman in 1951.

Walt didn't actually get me into fandom directly, but he prepared the ground in my mind.
I was always fascinated by Walt's column, and intrigued by this subculture of conventions and fanzines.
Nevertheless, Walt made it sound as though SF fans were having a wonderful time and over the years I picked up a lot of information about fandom from his columns.

Walter Willis, winner of a special 1958 Hugo award for "most outstanding fan," died October 20 of a heart attack.
Through his long and typographically distinguished career in the fan press, Willis is largely credited with introducing Irish science fiction fandom to the rest of the world.
Willis was also very active in promoting relations among SF fans in Europe and North America, being credited as "the original inspiration" for the Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund (TAFF), which he generously supported throughout his life.
