Abel was well cast in several of the plays of Eugene O'Neill.
Abel had a go at a romantic lead when he replaced Francis Lederer as D'Artagnan in the 1935 version of The Three Musketeers; but the film was dull and Abel's performance mannered, so, thereafter, he was more effectively cast in top supporting roles.
With his performance as the prosecuting attorney in Fury, Abel established his standard screen image: the well-groomed, mustachioed professional man, within whom lurked a streak of barely controlled hysteria.

A prolific character player, Walter Abel began his career in the 1920s and appeared in several early productions of Eugene O'Neill plays.
In Fritz Lang's blistering indictment of lynch violence, "Fury" (1936), Abel was in splendid form as the fiery D.A. who tries an entire mob for its apparent murder of an innocent man (Spencer Tracy) and proved a fine sidekick to Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby in "Holiday Inn" (1942).

And James Stewart's Tom Jeffords is able to pursue peace, but Douglas' Johnny Hawks must abandon the family he nearly "adopted" and all contact with his own people; Hawks has become such an outcast at the end, who must watch from a safe distance as the whites move on in peace.
Similarly, there is not a hint that the adult whites around him, with the exception of Walter Abel's army captain, have learned much of anything from the ordeal they suffer from the attack on the wagon train and the fort.
One has a profound (and accurate) sense that this is no better than a truce for the moment, with more tragedy to come.
