Walter Afanasieff has been widely regarded as a top record producer and songwriter over the past decade.
"Hero" was written by Afanasieff and Carey in 1992, and was originally conceived as a theme song for the movie, Hero (starring Dustin Hoffman), which would potentially be sung by Gloria Estefan.
Afanasieff produced "Hero" with Carey, and he performed all of the music tracks.

 Scott Healy - Bluedogmusic.com
It seems that producer Walter Afanasieff was coming to NY in early July 2000 and had an idea for a new Ricky Martin track, written by Robi Rosa and Desmond Child.
Walter wanted to try a full Big Band, to be arranged by Scott Healy, playing live in the studio, something that would punch up the track, turn it into (in his words) "a dance band for the new millennium".
Afanasieff was flying into NY on a Sunday and time was of the essence.

Don't get me wrong--JD writes great ballads for her too, but Walter's music was so beautiful and sweet and really matched well with her voice.
But as far as the last time Walter and Mariah worked together it would be around the Butterfly era.
Walter is great, but JD knows what works currently....I suppose.

 Mariah Carey
This album is being reviewed here because six of the eleven cuts are produced by Carey, either with her partner Walter Afanasieff or on her own, and she also sings some backups.
Afanasieff again gets in almost half the cuts, but there too there's too much reliance on star power and not enough old-fashioned melody: "My All" is so tentative it's hardly there, while "Outside" and "Whenever You Call" are even more routine 50's style ballads.
With Afanasieff out of the picture, the 50s ballads are gone, and the sound is up-to-date, though not painfully so: "X-Girlfriend" makes clever use of programmed percussion and MIDI'd acoustic guitar; the burbling keyboards of "Bliss" sound retro and modern at the same time.
