Transbus was formed after the merger of Mayflower owned Walter Alexander Coachbuilders and Dennis Chassis, both based in the UK and Henlys owned Plaxton.
Alexander and Dennis were bought by independent business men (one of which was Brian Souter owner of Stagecoach although kept separate from the bus and train operation).

When the Tariff Commission was established in 1926 the coachbuilders were one of the first industries to apply to have their case heard by that body.
They admit the coachbuilders can produce them at a price less than elsewhere, and they admit that if the tariff was imposed they would produce them more cheaply still, yet they say that the imposition of a tariff would be unduly burdensome on the consumer.
The Saorstát coachbuilders, having no experience of the construction of bus bodies, were unable to meet the demand, and the completed vehicles were imported from England.

Alexander’s fourth child, Constance Mabel, was born in Chelsea on 5 October 1869.
Alexander’s fifth child, Arthur Reynolds, was born on 8 October 1871, his sixth, Ethel Madeleine, on 13 April 1873, his seventh, Evelyn May, on 17 September 1874, his eighth, Cyril Hunter Robert, on 20 April 1876, his ninth, Nora Violet, on 19 December 1877, all in Chelsea.

Alexander's Motor Services of Kilsyth started operating in 1923, and W. Alexander and Sons Ltd. was formed in 1924.
The Brush bodies on these four were modified by Alexander on arrival, increasing the seating capacity from 30 to 35, giving them a repaint in all-blue livery, adding the "Bluebird" flash and logo on the side, and replacing the sliding entrance door with a folding one, now a standard feature for all Alexander vehicles.
Alexander acquired 35 halfcab Daimler CVD6 coaches in the period 1947-49 (D1-D35 / AWG 896, BMS 397-425, BWG 570-574) and a further 13 full-front coaches in 1951 (D36-48, DMS 549-561).

The coachbuilders considered the idea as early as 1873 "of doing away with public house club houses"; especially as stationary relief for unemployment had become more common than travelling relief.
Very soon the coachbuilders were paying next to nothing on travelling each year, and the introduction of the Labour Exchanges Act of 1910 rapidly eliminated the practice altogether.
The coachbuilders were rapidly forced to rethink their strategy generally.

It is certainly over three years since it was referred to the Tariff Commission, and the loss in wages to Irish workers occasioned by the delay in reporting on the application has been estimated at over £1,000,000.
In reply to a Parliamentary Question a few minutes ago the Minister for Finance admitted that the report on the application of the coachbuilders had been further delayed by the fact that the members of the Tariff Commission were appointed to conduct the Grain Inquiry.
At the time that the Minister was proposing to establish the Grain Inquiry the fact that the appointment of these members [409] would have that effect was forcibly pointed out from these benches, but the Minister took no notice.

All of these routes have remained, now operated by Double Deckers, except the 65C which was never really started or withdrawn - it never ran on time (or at all sometimes) and then in just disappeared!
Dating from 1998 and classified MV60 to MV84, these buses have Mercedes Benz 814D (Vario) chassis with bodywork by Euro Coachbuilders and have Mercedes Benz engines.
Only 6 (MV60, 62, 68, 70, 76 and 83) remain with Dublin Bus at Harristown Garage and the rest are withdrawn with some sold on for further use with private operators.
