Alston was a first baseman with the St Louis Cardinals in the 1936 season.
As a manager, Alston was noted for his studious approach to the game (he had taught school in the off-season while in the minors) and for signing 23 one-year contracts with the Dodgers at a time when multi-year contracts were becoming the norm in the sport.
Walter Alston was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Walt Alston had exactly one at-bat in his major league career, on September 27, 1936, as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals (he played as a substitute for another Hall of Famer, Johnny Mize).

DARRTOWN — This small Butler County town has one claim to immortality: It was the home of Walter “Smokey” Alston, longtime manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers and nemesis of the Big Red Machine.
Now a committee of townspeople is trying to change the name of Main Street (Ohio 177) in Darrtown to the Walter “Smokey” Alston Memorial Highway and erect a historical marker devoted to the baseball man. He died in 1984.
Alston began managing the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1953.
