Walter Brennan is best known for his supporting roles, and he's the most-honored supporting actor in the history of the Academy Awards.
Brennan worked often with his off-screen friend, Gary Cooper, appearing with him in "The Wedding Night" (1935), "The Cowboy and the Lady" (1938), "The Westerner" (1940), "Sergeant York" (1941), "Meet John Doe" (1941), "Pride of the Yankees" (1942) and "Task Force" (1949).
Brennan was born Walter Andrew Brennan on July 25, 1894, in Swampscott, MA.

Brennan was politically conservative, and supported American Independent Party candidate (and former governor of Alabama) George Wallace over Republican Party candidate (and, at the time, former Vice President) Richard Nixon during the 1968 Presidential campaign because he felt Nixon was too liberal.
For his contribution to the television industry, Walter Brennan has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6501 Hollywood Blvd. In 1970, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

It had originally been the hope of Walter Brennan (and his family) that he would follow in the footsteps of his father, an engineer; but while still a student, he was bitten by the acting bug and was already at a crossroads when he graduated in 1915.
Brennan died of emphysema in 1974 at the age of 80.

Brennan was able to pick and choose his roles, and turned down the coveted part of Jeeter Lester in John Ford's production of Tobacco Road because the part seemed too morally compromised.
Brennan did get to play the even more choice role of Ike Clanton in Ford's My Darling Clementine (1946) and reprised his portrayal of an outlaw clan leader in more comic fashion in Burt Kennedy's Support Your Local Sheriff some 23 years later.

When I was 8 years old and I waited for two years for Walter Brennan and grandson to find the father, missed one show, and the next week it had disappeared.
Re another reader's comment: yes, Brennan was 73 when the series started, but I think he always looked 105 even when he was 40 and I think he would have looked 105 if he were alive (and 108) today.
My recollection is that they found the son of Walter brennan in the final episode and as they say in the classic westerns - they rode off into the sunset.

Strange that no one seems to know how Brennan got into music in the first place.
Brennan does not sing at all on the record, but one hears a melody at least in the CHORUS section (as opposed to the VERSE) sung by the female choir in the background in sort of a delay effect.
