Buller viewed native birds the way Charles Frederick Goldie (1870-1947) was to depict the Maori ‘noble savage’: Being on the verge of extinction was à la mode as a romantic, nostalgic theme in the late 19th century, good for business.

In paintings such as Waiting for Buller, Hammond moves away from mutated forms and renders the birds in a painstaking, accurate manner reminiscent of scientific illustrations.
However, these relics of the past are seen in very contemporary surroundings—they aren’t waiting for Buller in their tranquil bush habitat but rather propping up the bar at a seedy pub.

Although appearing years later on calendars, playing cards and other everyday items, the popular images known as ‘Buller’s birds’ were first seen in a 19th century classic, A History of the Birds of New Zealand by naturalist Walter Buller (1838-1906) and artist Johannes Keulemans (1842-1912).
The demand for this limited edition was such that Buller was back in London in 1885, making arrangements for a second printing and supervising the preparation of an entirely new set of plates by Keulemans.
In many ways it was an ideal partnership—Walter Buller’s meticulous prose combined with the virtuosity of Johannes Keulemans’ illustrations creating a masterwork among the canon of New Zealand bird literature.

Tail feathers and stuffed birds were in such demand that the bird was hunted vigorously until it was no longer found.
The notable ornithologist Sir Walter Buller, who killed large numbers of huia himself, reported that a Maori hunting party collected 646 huia in one month.
While the Prince of York's visit obviously affected the plight of the huia, it is not known if it was the total cause of extinction, as the bird's habitat was severely depleted by 1907.
