  Walter Burley Griffin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Walter Burley Griffin (November 24, 1876 - February 11, 1937), American architect, is best known for his role in designing Canberra, Australia's capital city.
Griffin was born in Maywood, in Chicago, Illinois, and obtained a degree in architecture in 1899.
Extant major buildings that are characteristic of Burley Griffin's style include the Willoughby Incinerator in the Sydney suburb of Willoughby, the old Capitol Theatre in Swanston St, Melbourne, and Newman College at the University of Melbourne.

He received his degree in architecture from the University of Illinois in 1899 and then returned to Chicago, joining the group of architects already assembled at the Steinway Piano Company building, which was referred to as Steinway Hall.
Walter practiced architecture for 21 years in Australia before leaving for Lucknow, India to design the University of Lucknow library building.
While in India Walter died in 1937 from peritonitis developed from a ruptured gall bladder that occurred while he was in Australia.

Walter Burley Griffin and his most talented wife Marion Mahony are still fighting their way out of the shadows of Frank Lloyd's Wright's "presence"..however this book greatly enhances our knowledge of the legacy the Griffin's built here.
Bottom line, Walter and Marion were a powerful architectural team and Illinois/Iowa both house an unbelievable collection of their prairie school gems.
I would highly reccommend this book as a starting point for anyone interested in exposing themselves to the Griffins are their influence on Frank Lloyd Wright and the prairie school.
