Walter, who did so much for others, particularly young musicians, could not have been more negligent of his own health.

Walter Davis, Jr. : Davis Cup - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Walter Davis, Jr.'s debut record as a leader for Blue Note is a terrific hard bop session, a driving collection of six original tunes that emphasize the strengths not only of the pianist himself, but also his supporting band: trumpeter Donald Byrd, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Taylor.
Apart from the lovely ballad "Sweetness," Davis Cup moves along at a brisk pace, with the rhythm section urging the soloists to new heights.
Davis, of course, does more than acquit himself -- he contributes an engaging, energetic performance that keeps the music grounded.

This session is from August 1959 and features Jackie McLean on alto sax, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, Art Taylor on drums, and Davis on piano.
In any event, it is the reason I can only give "Davis Cup" four stars, even though it is a great set.

 Musicgalley: Interview with Alanda Davis
Growing up, Davis spent her time writing poetry, taking up guitar, songwriting and contending with racial and civil rights issues in school and beyond, which have only served to mold her aesthetics and enduring positive, survivor's nature into a voyage of self-discovery and a drive for connection and acceptance for all.
And that's what I'm thinking, that's what my dad always did (pianist Walter Davis Jr.) and a lot of people that I respect did; not their peers but people you could mold and watch them do their thing later on.
And it was The Walter Davis Trio, I think it was called 'Nighthawk' and it was the phattest.
