Walter Franklin George (January 29 1878 – August 24 1957) was an American politician from the state of Georgia.
George was born on a farm near Preston, Georgia.
George was a member of twelve committees while he was in the Senate, and chairman of five, including the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations from 1940 to 1941 and from 1955 to 1957, and the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance fom 1941 to 1947 and from 1949 to 1953.

The Walter F. George dam was built in 1962 on the Chattahoochee River by the Corps of Engineers and it soon developed seepage problems.
Two partial cut-offs were built in the past to attempt to remedy the situation, but the problems continued, jeopardizing the safety of the structure as well as reducing its power generating potential.
In 2001 the Mobile district of the Corps advertised a design-build contract for the construction of a 200 feet deep cut-off in front of the concrete structure of the dam starting from 90 feet of water, cutting through a concrete lock structure, a submerged retaining wall and extending on both sides on the earthen embankments.

The Annotated Checklist of Georgia Birds lists the American White Pelican as rare in the coastal plain with a late spring date of 10 May. On 30 May 2004, my wife Marie and I were birding the Georgia/Alabama border area of Clay County which includes Lake Walter F. George.
We had spotted a laughing gull at the lake earlier in the day and returned to the dam road at 5:15 p.m.
Walter F. George Lake Project is located in west central Clay County at the Georgia/Alabama state lines.

In January 2002, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District, began construction on an underwater seepage cutoff wall at the Walter F. George Lock and Dam, located at the southern border of Georgia and Alabama on the Chattahoochee River.
MACTEC provided construction management and geotechnical/geological engineering support during construction on this $62 million project, which was completed eight months ahead of schedule and approximately $6 million below the USACE’s projected budget, with no outstanding claims.
