Irwin Abrams: "The Multinational Campaign for Carl Von Ossietzky"
Gerlach's strategy was to mobilize a multinational network of fellow exiles, who would elicit public support for Ossietzky from prominent figures in the countries where they were active, all the while remaining behind the scenes themselves.
Walter's list has several congressmen, but the major support in the United States came from academics who were already active in defense of intellectual liberty.
I did not see the Hilde Walter Nachlass in the Institut fuer Zeitgeschichte in Munich and was told by the Zentrales Staatsarchiv in Potsdam that the "Memorandum-Briefwechsel des Freundeskreises Carl von Ossietzky in der Emigration: 1934-1936" was not accessible.

Walter Gerlach, who studied physics in Tübingen and had been professor there, probably recalled the area around Hechingen and Haigerloch.
He proposed building a laboratory within a bunker in the narrow limestone valley of the Eyach-River, since it was considered safer from air raids.
However, expanding the reactor was no longer possible in April 1945 due to the lack of both heavy water and additional quantities of uranium blocks.

Fiesler FI-156 Storch - The Collings Foundation
By now, the nationalist Italian troops had been notified of the attack and were swarming at the base of the mountain –the planned landing zone for the Fieseler FI-156 Storch sent to rescue the dictator.
The only option available to Walter Gerlach, pilot of the Storch, was to land the plane on the rock-studded mountaintop that only had a flat surface of only 250 feet in any direction.
Gerlach landed successfully in less than one hundred feet and then Mussolini and Skorzeny were loaded in the aircraft.

 Electron spin
In 1921, Otto Stern and Walter Gerlach performed an experiment which showed the quantization of electron spin into two orientations.
The silver atoms allowed Stern and Gerlach to study the magnetic properties of a single electron because these atoms have a single outer electron which moves in the Coulomb potential caused by the 47 protons of the nucleus shielded by the 46 inner electrons.
Stern and Gerlach directed the beam of silver atoms into a region of nonuniform magnetic field (see experiment sketch).

 Glen's Abstract
The limited number of possible orientations for elementary particles, referred to as ``space quantisation'', is a unique feature of quantum physics, where the normal freedom that objects have to be oriented in any direction is restricted to a discrete set of (2S+1) orientations where S is spin.
In its larger role as a key test of quantum mechanics, the Stern Gerlach experiment must be re-interpreted in the light of a theory that was not available in 1922.
However, we show that the oscillatory motion implied by the classical analysis of Stern and Gerlach would induce weak oscillations in the field sensed by the atom, and that these oscillations are tuned to the magnetic resonance for that atom.

Against the grain: Brownian motion in a non-equilibrium system
Back in the 1920s, Walter Gerlach and E. Lehrer observed rotational brownian motion of a fine wire immersed in an equilibrium environment, a gas.
Their simple experiment led to a key idea of equilibrium statistical mechanics, that the complex many-particle problem of particles colliding with the wire can be represented by two macroscopic parameters, viscosity and temperature.
