Topic: Walter Gibbons

Walter Gibbons - Biography - AOL Music
One of the dance figures whose influence and exposure far exceeds his actual name-recognition association, Walter Gibbons pioneered the concept of the remix and 12-inch single in America.
Gibbons began working for Salsoul Records in 1976, and recorded his first remix singles that year, Double Exposure's "Ten Percent" and the Salsoul Orchestra's "Nice 'N' Nasty." Utterly transformed with the addition of echo/reverb effects borrowed from dub and drum breaks, the singles influenced dozens of producers (and DJs).
Gibbons also worked on tracks for West End and Gold Mind during the late '70s, but was inactive for several years.

Walter Gibbons was a true "Native New Yorker." Born in 1954 in Queens he had a rather uneventful childhood growing up in the big apple.
By 18 Walter was plugged into the emerging gay nightlife scene and he became one of disco's earliest d.j.'s.
Most people believed that Walter Gibbons was a fading legend in the early history of disco, then in 1984 he resurfaced, and had a new and immediate impact on the development of Chicago House Sound.

Gibbons didn't acquire the cult status of David Mancuso or Nicky Siano, who were able to develop intense, almost spiritual relationships with their dancers thanks to the private status of the Loft and the Gallery, which helped create an environment that was both intimate and frenzied.
Gibbons told Harvey that he was now playing records at his own house parties and added that he took requests, even for records that he considered to be unchristian, because that could help him get into the mindset of his dancers and help reshape their outlook.
Gibbons was the first DJ to move into the protected world of the studio, and in the second half of the seventies and the first half of the eighties there were only three DJ remixers who really mattered: Gibbons, Kevorkian and Levan.

Gibbons set the drummer a new test within a week or two of his debut: how to keep up with his remix of "Ten Percent" by Double Exposure.
For sure, mixers had already edged their way into the recording industry, but Gibbons was the first to get his hands dirty on the cutting room floor, and his triumphant intervention meant that he and his comrades could now do more than tell record companies which songs were likely to make it in the clubs.

Until quite recently very little was documented about Walter; Born and raised in Queens, New York, he was resident DJ at Galaxy 21, where, as early as 1972, he was a pioneer in the art of mixing, and killer on the double copies, extending his beloved drum breaks like no one before him.
Walter's mix concentrates on the outro vamp section; turning up the jazzier elements like the rhodes and vibes and allowing enough space to not only let the groove swing; but for Loleatta's powerhouse vocal to really cut through and make an impression on the listener.
Walter turns up the drums and manages to give a proper underground disco vibe to what was frankly a rather lightweight album cut.
