Jenkins was born on March 23, 1918, in Jolly, Texas (population: 63), a lonely patch of dirt in the middle of the north Texas prairie.
Jenkins had served as Johnson's liaison to the FBI and was a friend of Hoover's, so when the FBI director heard what had happened, he sent flowers to Jenkins in the hospital.
Jenkins was a frequent guest at the LBJ ranch, where the former president spent the last years of his life, presiding over meetings of ranch hands instead of cabinet officers.
