Walter Johnson High School was founded in 1956 as part of the Montgomery County Public School system (MCPS).
WJHS became the second high school in Bethesda, after Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, and a fierce cross-town rivalry was born.
Walter Johnson High School was rated as one of "America's Best High Schools" by Newsweek magazine and was named the 45th best public high school in the nation for 2004.

One of the first five electees to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, Walter Johnson retired in Germantown, Maryland and was elected Montgomery County commissioner in 1938.
Johnson's gentle nature was legendary, and to this day he is held up as an example of good sportsmanship and his name has become synonymous with friendly competition.

The school’s victory in the “It’s Academic” program, which is an extracurricular activity at 81 schools across the region, demonstrates the benefits of academic competition in our schools.

 Seniors earn credit pushing pot reform
The pair, who graduated from Walter Johnson High School on Tuesday, helped "educate the public about the effects of our nation's marijuana policies and the need for more reasonable, compassionate alternatives," according to their student activity application form.
Teaching Sunday school is not an acceptable way to earn volunteer credit in Montgomery County public schools, said Mary Ruttkay of the Walter Johnson PTA.
She was reprimanded by school officials for choosing marijuana prohibition, but a coach encouraged her to stick with it.

 Living History: Finding Walter Johnson - Baseball Fever
I finally made the opportunity to visit the Walter Johnson Memorial monument located at Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD. The monument formerly was located at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. After Griffith was demolished in 1965 the monument was removed and at some point gifted to the school, which opened in 1966.
Previously upon my arrival at the school, one of the ladies whom I first approached mentioned some documents and articles which were described as "hidden" and others that are locked in a safe at the school.
Johnson resided in Montgomery County, near Bethesda, which is now situated just inside the Capitol Beltway (I-495) at the northwest quadrant of the loop.

This coming Thursday (January 9th) at 7pm, the WJ chorus will be hosting the annual cluster concert in the WJ auditorium featuring the choirs from North Bethesda, and Tilden Middle School in addition to performances by all the WJ choirs.
The Walter Johnson Chorus is full of many talented young men and women that all share a love for music.
In the 2004-2005 school year, 12 students participated in the Montgomery County Honors Choirs, and 6 students made the Maryland All-State Junior and Senior Choirs.

Swerdlow, who went undefeated during her years on the school's speech team, decided to volunteer at the MPP after a speech she gave on marijuana law reform was criticized by judges, who called the topic inappropriate.
Kathy McGuire, director for comprehensive pupil services for Montgomery County Public Schools, said the MPP is not on the district's list of approved organizations, which includes such organizations as the Alzheimer's Association, the Anacostia Watershed Society and the Montgomery County public libraries.
That means a school official and a parent must approve it for each individual student, she said.

According to Assistant Principal Chris Merrill, the policy changes were enacted this year because the committee in charge of school improvement, as well as a group of teachers, realized that it was time to establish a way of both consistently defining plagiarism in addition to regulating actions taken against students caught cheating and plagiarizing.
