  Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Walter Lantz
Lantz's first brush with animation had been a mail-order course he'd taken so early, he didn't even know what animation was except that it involved drawing pictures.
By the time he was 18, Lantz was writing, directing and animating cartoons of his own — and since many were made in the manner of the Fleischer studio's Koko the Clown, mixing live action with animation, he put in a fair amount of on-screen time himself.
Lantz's was the last of the classic-era cartoon studios to close — it kept on making new cartoons until 1972.

Walter Lantz Studio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Walter Lantz, who was Laemmle's part time chauffer and a veteran of the John R. Bray Studios with considerable experience in all elements of animation production, was selected to run the department.
In 1935, the studio was severed from Universal and became Walter Lantz Studio under Lantz's direct control and in 1940 Lantz managed to gain the copyright for his characters.
However, the studio benefitted from gaining talent from the other studios who were tired of the current management and usually found Walter Lantz's affable nature combined with his deep love for and intimate knowledge of animation a refreshing change from either Walt Disney's iron grip or Fred Quimby and Ed Selzer's boorishly ignorant interference.
