Walter M. Lea   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A farmer and livestock breeder by profession, Lea was elected to the provincial House of Assembly in 1915 as a Liberal and became commissioner of agariculture in 1919.
In 1930 Lea became premier when his predecessor was appointed to the Supreme Court but the Great Depression took a toll on the government's popularity and he lost the election the next year to the rival Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island.
Lea rebuilt the party while in opposition and in 1935 the Liberals won all 30 seats in the legislature, the first time such a thing had ever happened in the British Empire.

Born in Liverpool in 1845, Walter Crane was the son of portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer Thomas Crane.
This move was perhaps fortunate for Walter, who noted later in life that his love of landscapes and of the sea was the result of spending his early childhood in this idyllic place.
Walter Crane also expressed an admiration for the work of Greek potters and vase painters, which is reflected in his flowing draperies and in the classical dress and features of the people depicted in his illustrations.

The firm had had some good success publishing British authors, but due to the peculiarities of the copyright law, their publishing of British novels (including Sir Walter Scott and Jane Austen) could never be as profitable as publishing an American author.
Carey & Lea's letters are filled with descriptions of these dramas, as books were rushed off ship, through customs, and into the hands of teams of printers.
For Carey & Lea, some of their best sellers came from reprinting the works of Sir Walter Scott (who died in 1832), and Jane Austen, whose Pride and Prejudice was cautiously printed in 1832 in a run of 750.
