Walter Leake was born in Albermarle County, Virginia, on May 25, 1762, and came to the office of governor with a great deal of experience in political and governmental affairs.
Governor Leake arranged for the formal transfer of the federal land grant that had been given to Mississippi in 1819 to support a state university, and the state’s first major road system was begun during his term, with roads leading out from Jackson to Natchez, Vicksburg, Winchester (Yazoo City), Holmesville, Liberty, and to other points.
Leake County and Leakesville, the county seat of Greene County, are named in honor of Governor Leake.

A native Virginian, he was born in Albemarle County, VA, the son of Captain Mask Leake and nephew of Rev. Samuel Leake (Princeton graduate and a member of the first Board of Trustees of Hampden-Sydney College), the ancestor of Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Walter's innovative playing and distinctive sound from his amplified harmonica contributed heavily to making Muddy's recordings of the early 1950's the magnificent achievements they still are.
Walter also recorded frequently as a sideman for Chess/Checker in the years 1952-1968 in addition to extensive touring, including a tour of England in 1964 with the Rolling Stones.
Walter died on February 15, 1968 in Chicago at the age of 37 as a result of head injuries sustained in a street fight.

Walter Leake, a native of Albermarle county, Virginia, was the third Governor of Mississippi, and was elected Governor in the summer of 1821, and was re-elected to the same position in 1823.
Walter Leake was an unquestioned patriot, and an honorable, educated gentleman; and while there was nothing of great and striking interest or importance during his administration of nearly four years, he labored assiduously, and co-operated zealously with the legislators of those days, to advance the prosperity of the State and the happiness of its people.
Governor Leake left several children, and his descendants, in the persons of his grand and great grand children, are to be found to-day in more than one county in the State, all respected and honorable citizens.

The authors of the report speculate that Walter Leake was living on the property by 1840, when the county census listed him as head of a household consisting of four adults, six children, and nine slaves.
The following year, it is known that a Pembroke Leake was born to Walter and his wife Mahala at a place called "Aspen Grove." Described as a plot not far from Shady Grove Church, Aspen Grove is very likely the Leake homestead.
Wary Watchers In the WMCAR report, the Leake House is cited as a good example of a story-and-a-half, three-bay, hall-parlor-plan, side gable log house.

Leake House is an example of rural architecture that were built in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
Leake House was moved in 2006 in order to save it from demolition by Kerry Shackelford of Museum Resources, Inc. The original log exterior was exposed after siding that was later added to the house was removed (photo courtesy of Kerry Shackelford).
Pembroke Leake, seated in the picture, served as a Sergeant during the Civil War with the Richmond Howitzers and later transferred to Captain Osmond Taylor's Company (artillery) serving in Longstreet's Corp. His two brothers, Thaddeus Leake and Walter Leake also served.

One of Clinton's first settlers was Governor Walter Leake, who built his plantation house on the hill at the present intersection of Springridge Road and Highway 80.
Leake was one of four governors who lived in Clinton before the Civil War, and so did an impressive number of other leaders in state, church and the business world.
The trustees persuaded Walter Hillman to serve as president of the college, as well as the Institute, and he did so from 1867 to 1873.

I don't have much on Walter Leake, other than his father, I believe, was a William Leake, married to Mary Bostick.
Walter and Judith had a son, Josiah, married to Ann Fenton.
Since Leake is not a usual middle name, I am assuming that along the line, there is a Leake in the Boggan line, for which my Judith Leake Boggan was named.

The first two U.S. Senators from Mississippi in the 15th Congress were Walter Leake from Red Bluff and Thomas Hill Williams from the town of Washington, site of the General Assembly meeting which sent both men to Washington, D.C. Both men took their seats one day after statehood on December 11, 1817.
Leake resigned from the Senate in 1820 and served as Governor of Mississippi from 1821 until his death in 1825.

In January 1844, Josiah Leake bought a house and 1.5 acres adjoining the town of Salvisa in Mercer County, KY. He preached at Salvisa Baptist Church and others in that area for 4 years.
The Leakes moved to Missouri by 1850 and were in Lexington and also Clay County before moving back to KY for a year serving Lancaster, Crab Orchard, Summerset and Stanford.
Josiah Leake was pastor from May 1850 to July 1851 of the First Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Lexington, Lafayette County, MO. In the spring of 1861 the family moved from Missouri to Texas, settling first near Grapevine in the area that is now Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport.

Gerard Chittocque Brandon (September 15, 1788 — March 28, 1850) was an American political leader who twice served as Governor of Mississippi during its early years of statehood.
Brandon became governor for the first time upon the death of Walter Leake, serving from Leake's death on November 17, 1825 until January 7, 1826, when David Holmes, the last territorial governor and first governor of the State of Mississippi was again inaugurated as governor.
Brandon became governor of Mississippi again on July 25, 1826 and served until January 9, 1832.
