As is now customary, Sir Walter's birthday on Wednesday 15th.August will be recognized with a small ceremony outside the entrance to the Writers' Museum, Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, at 12.30 pm.
Gifford (University of Glasgow) is Honorary Librarian of Scott’s Library at Abbotsford and Director of the Abbotsford Library Research Project Trust, a joint venture of The Advocate's Library in Edinburgh and The University of Glasgow, which is stockchecking Scott's Library, publishing unpublished material, and undertaking further research into Scott's book collection.
Peter Garside is Professor of Bibliography and Textual Studies at the University of Edinburgh and was the founding Chair of the Centre for Editorial and Intertextual Research at Cardiff University.

Walter Stephens Newman, who became president of VPI on September 1, 1947, was born in Woodstock, Virginia, on July 20, 1895.

Newman served as an English and social studies teacher at the junior high level in the Amherst School District near Buffalo for more than two decades before retiring in 1975.

Edwin's father was the younger brother of Francis Newman who had absconded to the USA after the loss of the family's fortune, just a few years before Edwin's birth.
Perhaps it was as a result of these events that Edwin became the first Newman to take up a profession (outside of the Church) and the first to start his own business - a law firm in partnership with Francis Paynter, a solicitor from Penzance in Cornwall.
Edwin Sandys Newman was succeeded by Henry Bennett, a descendent of James Bennett who had purchased the reversionary rights to Cadbury and Sparkford estates from Edwin's uncle Francis in the early 1790s.

My guess of 1850 is based on a note in the 1851 Yeovil census which records that Edwin Newman (or perhaps his eldest son Edwin, then an articled clerk aged 21), was "Now of the Temple, London".
My father records that his grandfather Walter Newman was "impecunious" despite his successful military career.
Walter (the gunner), Henry and Bernard were executors of Edwin's will, and shortly afterwards Bernard took over Hendford Manor, presumably having purchased it from Edwin's estate.

Archivists can now be grateful to John Newman, Professor and University Archivist at Colorado State University, and Walter Jones, Assistant Head of Special Collections at the University of Utah, for their initiative to produce and edit Moving Archives, the first volume on the subject of large-scale archival collection moves.
In the introduction, Newman explains that the editors’ goal “…is to provide an initial piece of professional literature in what we hope will become a growing body of modern information about moving archives” (vii).
As Newman, Jones, and all of us who have faced the challenge of moving archival collections are well aware, pertinent professional literature before Moving Archives was meager at best.

 dOc DVD Review: Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1990)
While the movie is blessed with consistently fine performances (another great job by Paul Newman, whose work seems to improve with each new performance) and exquisitely detailed period sets, props and costumes, the story's events are strangely distant and uninvolving.
Walter's conservative beliefs hold obstinately fast in the face of significant sexual and racial change, while India's befuddled reactions to the world around her seem limited to laughter and tears; Walter has little emotional connection with his family, while India seems to have no will of her own.
Perhaps the creators' point is that the Bridges survive by clinging to their beliefs and behaviors, but they come across as small-minded people who alienate their children more with each passing year and have no real friends, not even each other.
