Walter Quintin Gresham (March 17, 1832 – May 28, 1895) was an American statesman and jurist.
He served as United States Postmaster General, as a judge on the United States Courts of Appeals, was a two-time candidate for the Republican presidential nomination and was Secretary of State and Secretary of the Treasury.
Gresham was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1884 and 1888, in the latter year leading for some time in the balloting.

Upon the death of Secretary of the Treasury Charles J. Folger in September 1884, Walter Q. Gresham (1832-1895) accepted President Arthur's stopgap appointment as Secretary.
Gresham agreed with Folger's suggestion that the surplus should be reduced by a cut in customs duties.
A believer in sound money, Gresham told New York businessmen that the only way to keep government currency afloat as legal tender was for the government to keep enough gold in the Treasury to meet the demand of notes presented.

Gresham's force arrived in Quitman and proceeded to burn the railroad depot, the Methodist Church that was used as a hospital, the town jail, courthouse, stores, a sawmill and a grist mill in addition to other buildings.
