Gresham was a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 1884 and 1888, in the latter year leading for some time in the balloting.
Gradually, however, he grew out of sympathy with the Republican.
From the 7th of March 1893 until his death at Washington on the 28th of May 1895, he was secretary of state in President Clevelands cabinet.

Although a post office was established in May, 1884, Gresham was not incorporated as a city until 1905.
The city of Gresham is serviced by TriMet's bus system, MAX light rail line as well as the fareless Sandy Area Metro (SAM) shuttle bus to Sandy, Oregon.

Macleod gave it this name, which has been universally adopted, under the impression that the principle was first explained by Sir Thomas Gresham in 1558.
Macleod states the law in these terms: the worst form of currency in circulation regulates the value of the whole currency and drives all other forms of currency out of circulation.
Greshams law applies where there i~ under-weight or debased coin in circulation with full-weight coin of the same metal; where there are twc metals in circulation, and one is undervalued as compared with the other, and where inconvertible paper money is put intc circulation side by side with a metallic currency.

One of them, Walter Hill, was sent to this vicinity during the building of the Sioux City and Lincoln branch of the Burlington railroad in which the Hills were interested.
Walter Hill became very friendly with a local man by the name of Hutchins and they organized a town-site company together.
This town was named in honor of Walter Quinton Gresham, who was secretary of state in President Grover Cleveland's cabinet.

Because of confusion with Hillsboro, the station name was changed to Bertha, for the wife of Richard Koehler, the railroad manager.
