In 1752, the County of Halifax was formed from Lunenberg for the convenience of the inhabitants in the fork between the Staunton and Dan Rivers.
Nicholas Hale, Jr., who emigrated from Baltimore, was in Augusta County, Virginia, as early as 1748, and in 1749 he, was appointed a Justice of Lunenberg County.
John Jr., the eldest of seven sons of John Hale, the pioneer who homesteaded on Bent Mountain in the Blue Ridge, remained in that vicinity and raised a large family.

Olan Conway Allen, 40, of 105 Bellview St., Staunton, indicted on one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In 1802, Staunton was pretty much a backwoods hog wallow, with little to recommend it as a place to live other than its taverns.

These operations were of alarming significance to the Confederates as they were low in breadstuffs and forage; their military roads were not yet completed; then, too, the Shenandoah Valley had been stripped of troops to reenforce Lee in the Wilderness.98 Breckenridge proposed, however, to halt Sigel at Staunton with the aid of Wharton and Imboden.
At the same time he was able to replenish Confederate supplies by a large amount of army stores -- 120,000 bushels of oats, 400 cavalry saddles and other equipment, which had been a part of the Fifth United States Cavalry, and all of the horses that were in the vicinity.
After a short courtship John McCausland and Charlotte Hannah were married on October 3, 1878, by the Reverend Hugh Brown at Cliffside, the residence of her family, in Charlotte County, Virginia.228 Of this marriage four children were born: Samuel H., 1880; John, Jr., 1881; Charlotte Emmette, 1883; and Alexander, 1887.
