Antonin Dvorak - Walter Susskind [JW]: Classical Reviews- March 2002 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
It’s often forgotten that Susskind was born in Prague, in 1913, and studied in an essentially Austro-Czech tradition; with Josef Suk from 1928-33 and as a piano student of George Szell, then a prominent visitor to Prague until the events in continental Europe forced him to turn first to Britain and then, eventually, to America.
Susskind meanwhile, ever alert and ever superb, restrains the burgeoning con fuoco, vesting it with the chirping woodwind properly brought out and now leading, now following the piano’s line.
Susskind shapes the bass lines of the orchestral tutti in the first movement with effortless skill; there is crisp articulation and a flexible approach to rhythm but Ricci’s passagework can be brusque and aggressive and his phrasing a little prosaic.

SACD Review: Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (Susskind) - ‘Holst: The Planets’
Susskind was one of the few conductors to recognize and respect the subtle, mystical soul of this music.
Walter Susskind was a Czech-born conductor who never quite made it to the top of his profession, as his relatively few recordings show him to have been more interested in lyrical beauty than in showing off.
Susskind’s “Mercury” isn’t as fast as some, but it is played with poise and finesse that demonstrate what a fine orchestra the Saint Louis Symphony had become in his hands.

SACD Mozart Requiem / Smetana Ma Vlast / Brahms Cello sonatas
Walter Susskind directed the St. Louis Orchestra from 1968 through 1975.
He was a much under-rated conductor, as evidenced by this dynamic performance of Smetana's powerful symphonic cycle which, with Susskind's brisk tempi, can be accommodated on a single disk.
The surround sound is terrific, superior to what is heard on many modern surround recordings in conveying the sound of a large orchestra playing in a fine hall.

The Mono Maven Continues His Survey of RCA Mono LPs Review By Leonard Norwitz
Reiner may have better orchestral command than Susskind, but Tchaikovsky doesn't demand so much from them that we miss the difference all that much.
The exception is the finale, where the CSO/Reiner wins on points, especially in the opening measures, which in Susskind's hands are relatively lethargic.
So if you find Heifetz a bit too fast to express the necessary nuance and emotion of this concerto, and some do, you should try the Kogan with Constantin Silvestri and the Paris Conservatoire on EMI CD, or for megabucks on stereo LP.

The Bruch with Walter Susskind is a bold, forward reading with lots of presence.
Menuhin's later renditions are outstanding, but the combination of a younger Menuhin, the war-horse Philharmonia Orchestra, and the studio excitement that exudes from seemingly all of the great early stereo recordings, make these accounts a notch better.
Of course, having Walter Susskind (for the 1956 Bruch) and Efrem Kurtz (for the 1958 Mendelssohn) on the podium is just icing on the cake.
