Born in Ashley, Pennsylvania, Tewksbury studied for a dental degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
In the 100 m, Tewksbury equalled the world record in the semi-finals, but placed second in the final to Frank Jarvis.
The final of the 200 m was held a week later, and Tewksbury won his second Olympic title, clearly defeating Norman Pritchard of India.

Walter liked the idea of a career that could make a difference in his community and help his fellow man. At the close of WWII, with the support and backing of his newlywed wife, Gloria, and while working two jobs to support his fledgling family, he attended N.E.I. for Funeral Service in Boston.
Walter's sense of community is readily apparent when you look at his efforts to charter the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks Lodge, and the Tewksbury Lions Club.
Walter's many civic affiliations also include the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the former Tewksbury Veteran's Association, as well as numerous national and state professional organizations.
