v-2 rocket - Article and Reference from OnPedia.com
By 1932 the Reichswehr started taking notice of their developments for potential long-range artillery use, and a team led by General Walter Dornberger was shown a test vehicle designed and flown by Wernher von Braun.
The latter was a full-sized design with a range of about 175 km (109 miles), a top altitude of 80 km and a payload of about a tonne.
It was clear that Von Braun's designs were turning into real weapons, and Dornberger moved the team from Kummersdorf (near Berlin) to a small town, Peenemnde, on the island of Usedom on Germany's Baltic coast, in order to provide more room for testing and greater secrecy.

Walter Dornberger and Wernher von Braun, his technical director, had a single purpose-the rapid development of specific weapons-and there was no official tolerance of work not directly related to the main goal.
Thiel himself drew plans for testing rockets larger than any yet dreamed of-on the order of 5-14 meganewtons (1-3 million lb thrust).

Thiel also tried other propellant combinations including gasoline-liquid oxygen, methane-liquid oxygen, hydrazine-nitric acid, liquid hydrogen-liquid oxygen, and liquid hydrogenliquid oxygen-fluorine mixtures.

He describes systematically how, under the brilliant leadership of Dr. Walter Thiel, the propulsion engineers developed improved injection, an 18-pot pre- chamber system, a spherical combustion chamber, a combination of film and regenerative cooling, and a shorter nozzle than previously used.
He provides a thorough account of the work under Dr. Ernst Steinhoff, who was "less brilliant than Thiel and Hermann" but a good manager and administrator.
The topic is technologically complex, but Neufeld successfully presents to the general reader the development of gyroscopes, Helmut Hoelzer's mixing device, hydraulic vane servomotors, engine cutoff devices, and a guide beam.

It was also alleged that von Braun sympathized with the British, and had hatched a scheme to escape to England by airplane and share his rocketry knowledge with the enemy.
These were serious charges, but the matter was dropped after Walter Dornberger appealed directly to Adolph Hitler, claiming the charges were false and that von Braun was not expendable where continued development of the V-2 was concerned.

At the end of the war, a race between the United States and the USSR to retrieve as many V-2 rockets and staff as possible began.
Three hundred trainloads of V-2s and parts were captured and shipped to the United States, added to this 126 of the principal designers, including both Wernher von Braun and Walter Dornberger were in American hands.
In the midst of this, in October 1945 as ´´Operation Backfire´´, the British assembled a small number of V-2 missiles and launched three of them from a site in northern Germany.
