Yet in the Andante, Weller maintained a more careful balance: the blend between Gringolts and the orchestra was wonderful, full of Mozartian longing and melodic shapeliness.
Weller encouraged the BBCPO to adopt a sonorous and unfussy approach, with heartwarming results.
Weller paced the performance to perfection, smoothly propelling Dvorak's busy invention forward while remaining sensitive to its intricate details.

Weller's accompaniment is highly musical, but lacks charisma when the orchestra is put to the text in the 'battle' of the development.
The colourful scoring of the Concert Fantasia, with its engaging affinities with the ballet theatre in the first movement, is presented no less successfully and the performance is first class.
There is a powerful first movement cadenza as impressive as that in the concerto (and Sgouros makes the very most of it) a tender Andante featuring a duet for piano and cello, which is beautifully done here and a spirited, dance-like finale, with a fine lyrical strain for the orchestra.

The movement in the end never fails to reflect the adventurous spirit of Beethoven.
Perhaps I could generalize a little: Walter Weller's shaping of the works is not as accurate as that of Lill's -- he manages to make the orchestral tuttis sound rather un-spirited sometimes.
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) is not in top form unfortunately, away from their usual conductor (Sir Simon Rattle, who is by the way leaving the CBSO), they don't seem to play just as well.
