Walter L. Whipple, farmer, section 12, Monroe Township, was born Feb. 9, 1835, in Genesee Co., NY, and is a son of William M. and Sarah A. (Thompson) Whipple, the former a native of Pennsylvania, the latter of New York.
Whipple was bred to the vocatin of farmer, and in 1864 came to Michigan with his father, locating in Ingham County.
Whipple was married in Ingham County, June 14, 1869, to Alice E., daughter of Randolph W. and Claramon (Harmon) Whipple, natives of the state of New York.

 Ships of the California Naval Militia: USS Whipple
The first WHIPPLE (Destroyer No. 15) was laid down on 13 November 1899 at Sparrows Point, Md., by the Maryland Steel Co., launched on 15 August 1901- sponsored by Miss Elsie Pope, and commissioned on 17 February 1903, Lt. Jehu V. Chase in command.
The destroyer periodically served as flagship of the flotilla and operated off the east coast and in the Caribbean until she was placed in reserve at Norfolk on 6 September 1905.
WHIPPLE soon commenced patrols off the approaches to the vital Panama Canal before departing the Canal Zone on 5 July.

Whipple inaugurated the exhibit with a slide talk on Thursday, October 7, followed by an opening reception at the gallery.
Walter Whipple, a professor of Polish at Brigham Young University, acquired the bulk of his collection of folk art in Poland from 1991 to 1993.

Walter Whipple is the son of Thomas Whipple and Lydia Gates Whipple; the husband of Susan Donaldson Whipple; and the father of Lothario D. Whipple.
Sometime after Walter arrived in Michigan, his father, Thomas Whipple, accompanied by his third wife, Rhoda Merrill Whipple, also came to Michigan (Thomas's first wife, Lydia Gates WhippleWalter's mother — had died previously, and is buried in New Hampshire).
In subsequent years, Walter's wife, Susan Donaldson Whipple; his father-in-law, Lothario Donaldson; and his son, Lothario D. Whipple, also died, and were buried nearby.

Whipple worked at Harvard University from 1931 to 1977, and directed the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from 1955 to 1973.
In the 1930s, using a new, two-station method of photography, Whipple determined meteor trajectories and found that nearly all visible meteors are made up of fragile material from comets, and that none can be shown to come from beyond the solar system.
Whipple’s work on tracking artificial satellites led to improved knowledge of the shape of the earth and greatly improved positions on earth.

Walter Whipple, BYU professor of Germanic and Slavic languages, will be displaying his voluminous Polish art collection at BYU's Museum of Art through July 21.
Whipple put the collection together while serving as a mission president in Poland in the early 1990s.
He was first introduced to the folk art while serving as a violinist's apprentice in Poland in 1983.
