Waltham is some distance from the inner circle of Boston's hip, bustling inner neighborhoods (such as Cambridge, Beacon Hill, the Back Bay, and the South End), and maintains a distinctly different flavor.

In the autumn of 1814, a power-loom was put in operation in Waltham by the last company, — said to have been the first in the country.
Waltham was taken from Watertown, and incorporated, January 4, 1737.
