Walthamstow is an area of the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
Walthamstow is bordered by the River Lea to the west and Epping Forest to the east.
From 1894 Walthamstow was an urban district and from 1926 a municipal borough in Essex.

Like many other areas, Walthamstow grew rapidly during the second half of the 19th century after the arrival of the railway from London.
Since 1968 Walthamstow Village has been a conservation area, due to the historic buildings such as the 16th century almshouses and former workhouse of 1730 which now houses the Vestry House Museum, where the history of the area can be researched.
Walthamstow's contribution to the development of transport and technology is being recogised at the Pumphouse Centre, where Victorian steam engines are being restored to working order: Visit website at www.pumphouse.org.uk.
