P5 is not popular I believe because of high cost ($800 and up, if you missed the clearing out of them a couple of years ago for $499), mediocre accuracy (from what I've seen, no firsthand experience), and size inefficiency (8 shot in a wide chunk of steel).
Walther had problems and attempted a quick fix of the weak open top slide and Beretta copied Walther's mistakes and now they too have strengthened the slide of the Beretta 92 series of weapons because their weapon also had problems with cracked slides.
Walther did indeed want a police contract and they were well aware that the P38 P1 and even the P4 series of pistols would not win the contract.

P5 also featured addtional internal safeties, such as firing pin safety, which removes the rear part of the firing pin from under the hammer, unless trigger is pressed, and also a firing pin block which disablet the forward movement of the firing pin unless the triger is pressed.
The P5 Compact is an even more compact firearm, similar in design but with shorter barrel and slide.

When the name Walther is mentioned, most readers will call to mind either the Walther PP or PPK, if for no other reason than its co-starring role with British Secret Agent James Bond of Hollywood fame.
Only a few will note that Walther modified and improved the P-38 with the Walther P5 series, which are priced in the $1000 range, far beyond an acceptable cost for most handgun buyer.
Walther abandoned the P5 when it made the P88 which is, I think, the progenitor of this newest design - the P99.

In the case of the Walther, you don't lose a round in case of a misfire.
The Walther, overall however, is an excellent handgun, a classic, and as long as the ammunition used is rounded and of sufficient powder load to operate the slide positively, it will rarely jam.
The only negative comment I have on the gun is Walther should have better grips than the cheap fl plastic ones that came with it.

Also Walther developed QA action, which has partially pre-charged stricer that must be manually charget to full stroke via each trigger pull (somewhat similar in appearance to Glocks' "safe action").
P99 has polymer frame with removable backctrap of the handle, to provide to shooters better fit in the hands (3 sizes are standart).

Quite accurate, too, for a small pistol, but the trigger does tend to stack a bit at the end, likely due to the unique firing pin saftey which rotates the back of the pin up in line with the hammer.
IMHO, the P5 is the coolest of the Walther handguns!!
Just for the record out of the Walther P5, the SIG P6 and the HK P7 the HK P7 is the coolest and the one I carry the most.

The Walther P5 is certainly more elegant in appearance, but the P225 is utterly reliable and accurate.
You haven't asked about it, but out of Walther, Sig and HK choices, I would go with P7-M8, it is about the same size as others, but probably more accurate and very quick to get into action and easy first shot as it is single action.
Walther's police contracts are close to being fulfilled with the P5, and the P99 is already in use in many overseas law enforcement agencies

The Walther P5 would have been an excellent candidate for a threaded barrel with 6mm's of the barrel already extended out of the slide, but I have never seen or heard of one being produced.
The Walther P99 was first seen with a suppressor attached in the recent James Bond movie.
I don't even know if the pistol was a real Walther, though I do know that a real P99 was used in some scenes.

As near as I can tell, the Walther P-38 and P-5 series of handguns are the only mass-produced handguns that were designed to eject the empties TO THE LEFT of the gun.
08-17-2004 08:15 AM As for mass produced Walther also made a pocket pistol, the Model 9?, that ejected cases to the left.
There are other pistols that used a similar set up, but who made them eludes me at this very moment.

The P5 is on the cover, Moore is holding it, HOWEVER in the insert he is holding the PPK.
The slide assembly was a new design for Walther, but the frame (grip and trigger) are similar to scaled down version of the famous P-38.
I believe that that particular scene is the first in the film that the handgun is ever seen; during the pretitles, he uses an assault rifle to fire at the military truck, no gun is seen when Bond is in London.
