Walther P99 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Walther P99 is a pistol made in Germany by Walther Sportwaffen.
The P99 uses an internal striker as opposed to an external hammer, with a red-painted striker tip that protrudes from rear of the slide when the gun is cocked, as well as a chamber loaded indicator on the right side of the slide.
A redesigned P99 was presented in 2004, incorporating a modified trigger guard that eliminated the "ski hump", which is clearly visible in the accompanying images.

 Walther P99
The P99 appears to be designed in part to address some of the criticisms levelled at the Glock by the police, and was aimed in part at the German police market, to replace aging SIG-Sauer P225s, Walther P5s and HandK P7s.
The Interior Ministry released a revised specification for police pistols in the early 1990s, and the P99 was the first gun released to comply with the new criteria (the HandK USP Compact and P2000 being later examples).
Consequently, Walther was taken over by Umarex and the markets the P99 is aimed at are the police and civilian markets, unlike the military aspirations of the earlier P88.

The Walther P99 is a completely new design that demonstrates the benefits of solid research.
The light weight requirement for the Walther P99 dictated a polymer frame, but the Walther design team wanted more than a pistol with just another polymer frame, and they also wanted an exlusive trigger action that was not the duplicate of a well-known plastic frame pistol made in Austria (Glock).
The inherent accuracy of the P99 would appear from Frank James' (Combat Handguns Magazine) 250-round test session to do justice to the legacy of the Walther P-38, which he has found to be an extremely accurate 9mm pistol.
