Walther Wenck (September 18, 1900 - May 1, 1982) was the youngest general in the German Army during the Second World War.
Wenck took great pains to provide food and lodging for refugees; at one stage the Twelfth Army was estimated to be feeding more than half a million people every day.
Arriving at the furthest point of his attack he radioed the message "Hurry up, we are waiting for you." Despite the attacks on his escape path, Wenck brought his own and the remnants of the Ninth Army as well as many civilian refugees safely across the Elbe into territory occupied by the US Army.

It was fought in the Spree Forest near the village of Halbe, south-east of Berlin, and was a part of the Battle for Berlin, known as the 'Berlin Offensive Operation' by the Soviet Army.
In an attempt to coax Hitler out of his rage, the Chief of Staff of the OKW, General Alfred Jodl, speculated that the 12th Army which was facing the Americans could move to Berlin because the Americans already on the Elbe river were unlikely to move further east.
Hitler immediately grasped the idea and within hours the army's commander, General Walther Wenck, was ordered to disengage from the Americans and move 12th Army north-east to support Berlin.

 [13.0] On To Berlin
On the afternoon of 22 April Hitler sent Keitel southwest of the city to give General Walther Wenck and his 12th Army orders to come to the rescue of Berlin and send the Red hordes packing.
Wenck was a soldier's soldier, highly professional and a great inspiration to his men, and he knew perfectly well that he had been ordered to lead his men to futile destruction.
Wenck hardly bothered to acknowledge most of the orders sent him, though communications and organization were in such a bad state that it wasn't much trouble to ignore them.

 WW2DB: Battle of Berlin
By this time, Berlin had no airfields left to evacuate any top commander who remained in Berlin; the last two airfields, Gatow and Tempelhof, were both taken after the last flights left in the early mornings of 26 Apr under heavy Russian fire.
Around that time, a German counterattack from outside the city led by General Walther Wenck began with promise, but very soon was bogged down by the Russian defenders, therefore failing the last attempt to link up with the forces in Berlin.
The army commanded by Hasso von Manteuffel, on the other hand, realized the impending doom, and began an organized retreat into Berlin.
