As Operation Barbarossa opens, Brauchitsch as Commander-in-Chief is forced to co-sign and implement Hitler's infamous Commissar Order and Order for Guerilla Warfare which essentially condones the mass extermination of captured Soviet prisoners of war and civilians - an act that haunts him at the Nuremburg Trials.

Von Brauchitsch seemed not to be terribly keen on Neubauer, but, if that was the case, then the legendary, rotund Mercedes team manager could rightly have claimed the feeling was mutual after his driver won at Monaco in 1937 - against team orders - ahead of fellow Mercedes driver Rudolf Caracciola.

General von Rundstedt had doubts about the survivability of these units without infantry support, and asked for a pause while the infantry caught up; the halt allowed the British to evacuate their forces to Dunkirk.
von Rundstedt and others subsequently argued that the decision was Hitler\'s and stemmed from his belief that Britain would more readily accept a peace treaty if he magnanimously spared what remained of her expeditionary force.
When von Rundstedt demanded to be allowed to withdraw, Hitler became furious and replaced him with General Walther von Reichenau.

Walther von Reichenau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In September 1939, von Reichenau commanded the 10th Army during the invasion of Poland.
Unlike many German army commanders, who were preoccupied with their military careers and did not care for politics, von Reichenau was an active anti-Semite and supported the work of the SS Einsatzgruppen in exterminating the Jews in the occupied Soviet territories.
A few historians such as Walter Görlitz have sought to defend von Reichenau, summarizing his October 1941 "Reichenau Order" as "demanding that the troops keep their distance from the Russian civilian population." Actually, the order included such cruel directives as killing any Russian civilian found travelling without a permit and away from his home village.
