Topic: Walton Summit motorway

M65 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This particular extension was the scene of a lengthy stand-off between construction workers and police, versus protestors often known as 'eco-warriors'.
The Walton Summit motorway is an unofficial name given to a slip road connecting the roundabout linking Junction 9 of the M61 and Junction 2 of the M65, to the south-east of Preston.
The M65 is one of the few motorways in England that is not operated and maintained exclusively by the Highways Agency (the British Government body responsible for the motorways and main trunk roads in England).

A8(M) motorway (Northern Ireland) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The A8(M) motorway in Northern Ireland is a short spur of the M2 motorway, built as a part the M2, a planned route from Belfast to Ballymena
However, during construction, the terrain which would have to have been crossed was deemed to be too challenging, and the M2 was redirected to travel via Antrim, which meant that the short one-mile section of motorway which had already been built at Newtownabbey was now unnecessary.
The Walton Summit motorway, for example, is signposted as a part of both the M65 and M61 motorways.

It should be worth noting that the J3-5 section has some of the steepest gradients on the UK motorway network, and that the original plans called for the motorway to plough through central Blackburn (there is still sufficient evidence of this to the east of the town centre!).
It's signposted as "Walton Summit", and replaced the original road leading from the original Junction 9 on the M61.
This junction houses the infamous Walton Summit Motorway.

A freeway (also motorway or expressway) is a highway with full control of access from adjacent properties and no cross traffic, an important concept in many countries.
For instance, motorways in the United Kingdom are the only roads from which slow vehicles can be banned,{{fact}} and are assigned labels beginning with M and special blue signs.
Meanwhile, in England, the related concept of the motorway was first proposed by Sidney Webb in a 1910 book, The King's Highway, but was not formally embraced by the government until the passage of the Special Roads Act 1949.

 Birmingham
Birmingham's transition from an industrial centre to a tourism and services economy is best illustrated by the hosting of the first official summit of the G8 at the International Convention Centre (May 15 to May 17, 1998).
Due in part to its central location in England, Birmingham is a major transport hub on the motorway, rail, and canal networks.
Junction 6 of the M6 is also one of Birmingham's most famous landmarks, and probably the most famous motorway junction in the UK: Spaghetti Junction, officially called the Gravelly Hill Interchange.

 CBRD - Motorway Database - M65
When (many, many, many years later) it came to be extended to Preston, the original plan to build it as an urban motorway through the middle of Blackburn was scrapped and a new alignment to the south of the town was built instead.
Those who worked on the early stages of the motorway near Blackburn, which were built to three-lane standard (rather than the two lane newer sections), reveal that it was originally intended as a second Pennine crossing, which progressed no further because of a lack of progress on the Yorkshire side.
It also has a single-carriageway spur under motorway restrictions that joins the roundabout at the interchange with the M61: it's called the Walton Summit motorway.

The northern section was originally the top end of the Lancaster by-pass, one of the first sections of motorway in the UK.
The motorway then got extended into Cumbria, but from the current junction 35, leaving a small stub, with the junction at the end numbered 35a (It still says so on the signpost today).
This extension was built as a single carriageway road, with motorway restrictions.

A freeway (also superhighway, expressway or motorway as further explained below) is a divided multi-lane highway (road) designed for high-speed travel by large numbers of vehicles.
The term motorway was brought to prominence in the 1990s with the proliferation of private tolls, largely as a public rejection of the term free (even though this is not the correct meaning of the term), especially on freeways that had a toll added during this period to finance expansion.
While motorways have only existed since the 1990s, a few do not have tolls, and a few are called freeways by governments who built them toll-free to promote political advantage.

 Freeway Biography,info
A freeway (sometimes known as an expressway or motorway, or any of a large number of other terms, depending on the area of the world) is a highway, usually divided and carrying at least two lanes in each direction, designed primarily for high-speed movement of large numbers of motor vehicles.
In the UK the term motorway is used almost unanimously and refers to a specific type of road.
UK motorways are engineered to some of the highest standards in the world, with almost all motorways having a full-width hard shoulder (breakdown lane), full grade-separated interchanges with long on/off ramps and a barriered central reservation which is a compulsory requirement for a motorway (the term "median strip" is unknown in British English).

Because the term motorway refers to the legal status of the road rather than the standards to which it is built, occasionally quirks are sometimes thrown up, such as the Walton Summit Motorway in Lancashire, England, which is a very short section linking a motorway roundabout with a standard non-motorway road.
There are very many roads in the UK which have achieved or almost achieved motorway standard (mostly "A"-prefixed primary routes) but have not been designated motorways.

In Australia Freeways are named as either Freeway or Motorway (except in NSW where some Freeways are called motorways or expressways.
Tollways are exactly the same as Freeways in Australia, except a fee is payable, usually in the form of toll booths or electronic tolling technology (first used in Melbourne, Australia "E-Tag" on Citylink) to pay for the use of the particular tolled section.
