Walton is part of the Esher and Walton parliamentary constituency, as of 2005 a safe Conservative seat.
Nine Walton Society Councillors represent Walton on Elmbridge Council, with one representing Walton on Surrey County Council.
The name Walton is Anglo-Saxon in origin and is believed to mean "farm of the Britons" or to have meant 'Saxon settlement'.

Until 1800 Walton was a tiny village surrounded by the parks and open common lands.There was hardly any industry and the population mostly lived by agriculture, market gardening and servicing the big estates.
In that year Samuel Dicker, the wealthy owner of the land on the Walton side, built a wooden toll bridge which was replaced in 1786 by a brick structure.
Other great houses were Walton Lodge, believed to have been the home of Sir John Vanbrugh's parents, and the Grove, a house dating back to mediaeval times.

Walton Bridge Road in Shepperton was named by eight children ranging in age from three to 12 as their worst road to cross.
It passes under the South West Mainline railway near Surbiton station (this is about a mile North of the junction where the Guildford "new" line via Cobham leaves the main line); immediately after this is a turning on the right, which is the B3370 Victoria Road, where many of the shops in Surbiton are.
Past shops, the railway station and loads of traffic lights, the 244 has a junction with the A312 in North Feltham before petering out at a crossroads with the A315 (to Staines and Hounslow) and a service road into the North Feltham Industrial Estate.

Police have narrowed down the area from where she disappeared to just 50 yards outside the station and have identified a two-minute window when the abduction is most likely to have happened.
