Walvis Bay Radio has been on the air since 1922, when the old German H.F. Station in Tsumeb was transferred to Walvis Bay.
Walvis Bay Radio was officially handed over to Telecom Namibia by Telkom South Africa on the 1st March 1994, and now operates under the callsign V5W for Walvis Bay Radio and V5L for Luderitz Radio, which is remotely controlled via Walvis Bay Radio.
Walvis Bay Radio opted to keep this service open for the many foreign fishing vessels that operated along the Namibian coast and was officially closed down on the 1st February 2001 to allow for the implementation of GMDSS and international standards.

WALVIS BAY, Namibia - On October 31, 2003, Namibian Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services Richard Kamwi inaugurated several expansions to the Walvis Bay Multipurpose Center (WB MPC), a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded program.
It was built in response to combat the high HIV prevalence rate in the region and to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS through a vigorous prevention, care, and support campaign.
The local government of Walvis Bay donated the land for the center, and three U.S. agencies - the U.S. Department of Defense (through the American Embassy), USAID, and the Peace Corps - formed a collaborative partnership to provide the urgently needed services through this center.

Hein, Peter (who is the principal in the Ark here at Okahandja), and I drove over to Walvis Bay, Namibia's deep water port to turn in some paperwork and handle some issues regarding importing a container full of clothes and other goods donated by some CHIers in the Netherlands.
We stopped in Swakopmund, which is about 30km north of Walvis Bay; Hein had to swing by a bank and an architects with some plans for an Ark they'd like to build.
As you head toward Walvis Bay you can immediately see large container ships and fishing vessels in the bay.
