The Book Report - An Introduction to Kurt Vonnegut
After all, one of the myths about American life which Vonnegut lays bare is that of the importance of higher education-- it's not so much about learning as it is about making connections.
Not that connections are bad per se, but one must be able to distinguish meaningful associations based on common goals and interests (karasses) from trumped-up distinctions devised to create an us-vs.-them mentality (granfalloons).
Cat's Cradle, a satiric novel whose observation of social structures was so keen it fulfilled Vonnegut's anthropology dissertation requirement long after the author had abandoned his studies at the University of Chicago.

 Foma*: April 2005
Foma are the harmless untruths that get us through our life.
The only canonical foma in Vonnegut's writing is from his essay collection Wampeters, Foma, and Granfalloons where he uses as an example, "Prosperity is just around the corner."
This has not been cleared by a lawyer, but if your are unfamilar with the concept of common law copyright, you shouldn't use that as an excuse.

There are two, to my knowledge: Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons (1974) and Palm Sunday (1981, an autobiography… sort of).
A relatively recent interview will give you the idea (his pen, or tongue, is still in fine, biting form, when he whips it out).
Wampeters… in particular contains some whithering attacks on war itself, and the society that let it happen, in the Vietnam era.

Taken together, the words form as good an umbrella as any for this collection of some of the reviews and essays I have written, a few of the speeches I have made.
I am simply impressed by the unexpected insights which shower down on me when my job is to imagine, as contrasted with the woodenly familiar ideas which clutter my desk when my job is to tell the truth.

Although you'd never guess it from the title, Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons is a collection of essays, speeches, and reviews from Kurt Vonnegut - along with one piece of fiction and one interview.
Certainly, it isn't on par with his wonderful fiction (or even his marvelous non-fiction book, Fates Worse Than Death), but neither does it pretend to be.
