Vassa (from Pāli vasso, Sanskrit varṣaḥ, both "rain", Thai: พรรษา, pansa or phansaa; Burmese: ဝာဆုိပ္ဝဲတော္‌), also called Rains Retreat, is the traditional retreat during the rainy season lasting for three lunar months from July to October.
The focus of celebration by the laity is the first day of vassa, Wan Kao Pansa, during which worshippers donate candles and other necessities to temples, a ceremony which has reached its most extravagant form in the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival.
Vassa is followed by two of the major festivals of the year among Theravada Buddhists, Wan Awk Pansa and Kathina.

It occurs in October, and consists of a celebration where illuminated boats are put to float on waters.

Loy Krathong is scheduled on November the 26.
Other holidays are mostly on fixed days except wan asala butcha and wan khaophansa which are scheduled on July 31 st and August 1st and wan ook phansa on October 28th
