As late as 1864 Wandsworth was described as a quaint and old-fashioned village, straggling along the London-Kingston road, with country lanes and byways spreading out across the fields and along the banks of the River Wandle and the Thames.
Wandsworth Local History Service is located on the first floor of Battersea Library and features an extensive collection of local historical information.
The boundaries marking the London Borough of Wandsworth were established in 1965 by merging the former metropolitan borough of Battersea with approximately two-thirds of what then constituted Wandsworth.

In 1991 the route was again introduced on Sundays and revised to run from Colliers Wood Station to Belmont Station via Tooting, Mitcham, St. Helier and Sutton, and later that year the northern terminal was changed to Tooting (St. George’s Hospital).
In 1967 it was extended on Sundays from Burnt Oak to Edgware Station.
