Wandsworth School Boys' Choir (Boys' Choir) - Short History
Wandsworth School’s existence spanned almost a century of educational reform and change, from its foundation in 1895, from being a grammar school, a technical college and then a community comprehensive school, before it closed and merged with Spencer Park school during the drastic secondary school reorganisation under the now defunct Inner London Education Authority (Ilea).
Wandsworth School was founded in 1895 and developed under the 1902 Education Act as a grammar school, preparing boys for universities and the “learned professions”, according to an early prospectus.
Russell Burgess’ sheer enthusiasm meant the boys competed hard to get into the choir — not least for their priority rights in the lunch queue when they were rehearsing.

In the late sixties and early seventies Wandsworth School Boys Choir flourished.
(Wandsworth Boys' School was situated in Sutherland Grove in the London borough of Wandsworth.) Their director during this period was Russell Burgess.
The choir used older pupils, 'old boys' and staff for the tenors and basses and ranged in size from the full choir containing more than 200 voices, a 'semi-chorus' choir of 60 voices and a 'Consort' choir of 20 voices.

Completing the disc are The Golden Vanity, a rumbustious tale of piracy and treachery on the high seas, and the Missa Brevis.
This is only the second recording of Children's Crusade, after the Wandsworth School Boys Choir (Decca), the piece's dedicatee.
But a new recording was surely long overdue, and the Christ Church boys enter into the theatrical spirit of both this and The Golden Vanity with gusto, and sing without a hint of cloistered preciousness.

Russell (Brian) Burgess (1931-79) was appointed Director of Music in 1954 at this south London comprehensive school and formed a choir of about 240 boys which gave its first public concert in 1965.
The choir sang at London concerts and at the Holland Festival and the Aldeburgh Festival, as well as making broadcsts and gramophone recordings.
It seems to have disbanded soon after Burgess's death at the early age of 48 in August 1979.

The Decca sound is well up to the standard of the period (1971) and aside from some bumps and thumps in the long opening chorus,it's almost ideally warm and full-bodied.

Excellent playing by this Danish Orchestra, extra-exuberant singing by the Danish Choir and Soloists; Glagolitic is supposed to be other-worldly and they most certainly pull this off.
The Copenhagen Boys' Choir for Psalmus Hungaricus sang extremely well as did the soloists, such as Soprano Tina Kiberg, Tenor Peter Svensson, Alto Randi Stene, and Bass Ulrik Cold.

Clarity is the keynote in the fifth movement where the boys are a joy - sharp and cheeky - and then in the last movement Horenstein manages to bring out the drama and tension alongside great beauty and a sense of contemplation.

Bach had written the work for boychoir, but most recordings (and live performances) use an adult female choir.
In this recording, conductor Benjamin Britten chose to use the Wandsworth School Boys' Choir and they are exemplary: their voices never get into that whiny trebel we are used to hearing and their enunciation of the English language is beyond reproach.
Britten as the conductor in this 1971 recording summons the brilliance of his cast, the Wandsworth Boy Choir, and the English Chamber Orchestra.

War Requiem juxtaposes the Latin Requiem Mass, sung by the soprano soloist, the main chorus and the boys' choir, with settings of World War I poet Wilfred Owen, sung by tenor and baritone soloists with chamber orchestra.
An outstanding historic reissue—indeed, a "BBC Legend." This surely is a more fitting tribute to Giulini, than the BBC Legends issue (4023) of Tchaikovsky's PathÈtique and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, mono recordings made about 8 years earlier that hardly present the distinguished conductor at his best.
